Managing your Stress Easily

You’re in back-to-back meetings, your inbox is exploding, and your body feels like a live wire… sound familiar?

You’re running from one meeting to the next, your to-do list is a mile long, one kid is having trouble in school, and you’re asked to put another thing on your plate. While you’ve handled stuff like this before as a champ, you’ve noticed that things are not as easy to do lately.

It’s time to face it. You’re STRESSED more than ever before.

And I get it, it’s hard to take time to manage stress when you feel the pull of others to get things done. Whether it’s your boss at work or even balancing your homelife along with your work responsibilities.

The question is not can you handle another project, but it’s should you handle another project. Sure, I could tell you to take some stuff off your plate, delegate responsibilities to someone else, or ask yourself if this is something that needs to be done now. While these are great strategies that can help with time management in allowing more space in your schedule, it does not address the major problem. You’re working on autopilot and have been for months.

This autopilot stage is kind of like a meditative space, but in this case, it is not what is healthy for you or your nervous system. You’re in a fight, flight, freeze, or fawn bioreactive state. To be honest, that is where most of us live our lives because we have been conditioned to do more and more to climb up the corporate ladder. But staying there is not only causing you stress, but it could cost you your life.

Here are some simple ways to manage stress in the moment that don’t involve expensive equipment. Even 5 minutes a day of intentional stress reduction and stress management can support not only your work productivity, but it can also support your overall well-being.

  • Hand to Heart and Hand to Belly- Simply placing one hand over your heart and one hand over your belly while taking slow, deep breaths calms your nervous system and gets you back to your rest and digest state that your body desires.

  • Visualizing a Quiet and Happy Place- You’ve heard it before, just visualize your happy place. When you’re in a tense meeting and things are not going your way, take a moment and visualize this happy place. As you are thinking about this quiet and happy place, your body language will shift, and you might even smile.

  • Exhale- When you think about it, we hold our breaths when our body is asking us to breathe deeper. Taking a few deep cleansing breaths while you’re at your desk or in a meeting clears your head and allows more oxygen to your brain.

However you choose to manage stress, whether it’s in the moment or a regular practice, you are helping your nervous system to get into a calm state to make better decisions, improve problem-solving, increase focus, and reduce fatigue and burnout.
