5 Easy and Free Ways to Regulate Your Nervous System

Have you ever felt like your nerves were on edge, like you're always anxious or stressed out? It's a common feeling, especially with all the uncertainty and chaos of modern life. Fortunately, there are some simple and free ways to regulate your nervous system and calm your mind and body. Here are five techniques you can try:

Deep Breathing: Taking slow, deep breaths can help calm your mind and body by reducing the heart rate and blood pressure. It's a simple technique you can practice anytime, anywhere. You can start by inhaling slowly through your nose for a count of four, holding your breath for a count of four, and exhaling slowly through your mouth for a count of four. Repeat this cycle a few times until you feel more relaxed.

Exercise: Regular physical activity can also help regulate your nervous system. Exercise has been shown to reduce stress hormones and promote the release of endorphins, which are natural mood boosters. You don't have to do anything strenuous; even a brisk walk or gentle yoga practice can have a positive impact. Find an activity you enjoy and make it a regular part of your routine.

Mindfulness meditation: Mindfulness meditation is a technique that involves paying attention to your thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations in a non-judgmental way. It can help you become more aware of your triggers and regulate your nervous system responses to stressors. You can start by simply sitting quietly for a few minutes and focusing your attention on your breath, or using a guided meditation app. My favorite app is Insight Timer. (I'm not sponsored) This app is free but it also has a paid version.

Progressive muscle relaxation: This technique involves tensing and relaxing different muscle groups in your body to release tension and stress. It's a great technique to use when you're feeling tense or anxious. Start by tensing your toes for a few seconds, then release the tension and feel the relaxation spread through your feet and up your legs. Work your way up your body, tensing and releasing different muscle groups.

When I am having trouble falling asleep, this technique works perfectly.

Spending timein nature: Spending time in nature has been shown to have a calming effect on the nervous system. Being in a natural environment can reduce stress hormones, lower blood pressure, and improve mood. You don't have to go on a hike or camping trip; even a short walk in a park or a few minutes in your backyard can be beneficial. Take some time to appreciate the beauty of nature and let it soothe your nerves.

These are just a few of the many ways you can regulate your nervous system and reduce stress and anxiety. Experiment with different techniques and find what works best for you. Remember, taking care of your mental and emotional health is just as important as taking care of your physical health. So take some time for yourself and prioritize your well-being.
